History:

The Sisters of St Joseph opened St Thomas More's Catholic School in 1938 with an enrolment of fifteen pupils. In 1948 secondary classes commenced. Soon the need to provide boarding accommodation became apparent so in 1957 Chelsea Grove was estabished. St Thomas More's continued to grow, providing education for girls through to Grade 12. From 1978 to 1984 there were many changes at St Thomas More's Catholic School including a period where it became known as Marian College, Newstead Campus. In 1984, it once again became known as St Thomas More's Catholic School, catering for boys and girls from Kindergarten to Grade 6. In 1998, extensive refurbishments took place which ensured excellent facilities. The refurbishments also included extensions to provide a seminar and office centre for the Tasmanian Catholic Education Office.

Throughout all of these changes, the Sisters of St Joseph's tradition of treasuring every single child is very much valued and practised at St Thomas More's Catholic School today.

Location:

St Thomas More's is located in the Launceston suburb of Newstead on the corner of Abbott and Campbell Streets and approximately two kilometres from the city centre.

Transport:

St Thomas More's is well served by the Metro (Metropolitan Transport Trust) and private bus operators providing transport to most suburbs and to country towns on the outskirts of Launceston.

Special Features/Programs:

At St Thomas More's Catholic School we provide comprehensive programs in all curriculum areas. Our school joins with all Launceston Catholic schools to offer the opportunity to play instruments through the "Band Program". Commencing in 2006 a Computer Lab will allow each child to access up to date technology.

The thing that makes our school special to us is our thriving community spirit. All members feel valued and free to contribute to the life of the school. Within this environment each childs needs and strengths are recognised and catered for.
