History:

In 1899 Archbishop Murphy sent Father Martin Gilleron to Queenstown to choose a site for a Presentation Sisters Convent and school. The Sisters came to Queenstown to nurture learning and culture in a rugged mining town. In 1906 the Presentation Sisters left the West Coast and the school was closed. In January 1907 the Daughters of Our Lady of Sacred Heart re-opened the Convent and school. The Sisters began their work in a nine-room, wood and plaster convent, and within three years 188 pupils were being taught. The Sisters retired from teaching at St. Joseph’s after 84 years of dedication to the school. The first lay Principal appointed was Gerard Cronly. The school celebrated its centenary in 1999.
